Version 1.3.5 adds support for Internet Location Files, the clipping-like files created by dragging email addresses, URL's, etc., to the Finder. The release also improves compatibility with OS 9.

I reviewed previous versions of ClippingNamer beginning in 1998, always with plenty of "mouse" approval. Since then I have repeatedly reviewed it simply because ClippingNamer is one of my most used and valuable tools.

ClippingNamer offers several options, quickly accessed in a dialog box, that allow you to either manually name or let ClippingNamer automatically name the selection for you. Then it directs the named clipping to a location of your choice. Clever.

Also included are contextual menu (CMM) and FKEY options, both which add roughly the same functionality. With CMM, for example, you can select text, hold down your Control key, then create and name a clipping from the contextual pop-up menu.

What's the big deal about that? If you've been frustrated by not being able to create text clippings from web pages, this feature does the trick.

In a previous review I noted: "Saving a clipping as a SimpleText file is also a good idea. Such a good idea that one could hope future releases would permit the user to choose the application to 'save to' (Tex-Edit Plus comes to mind)." Recent releases include this feature. Just click the "File Type" button (see above) to bring up a dialog where you can select the text editing application you'd like your clippings saved to. The default is Simple Text, but you can change it to whatever you wish.

In each updated version, author Sexton adds useful features that make his $10 shareware a steal instead of just a bargain. I use ClippingNamer many times a day, each time bypassing the more cumbersome steps of copying, pasting, and naming pieces of data. I think you'll also find ClippingNamer to be 'must-have' Mac shareware.
